A day at the beach, sandcastle spaceships, and a sense that all is well again...
Writing TRUTHS UNTOLD was cathartic for me. By the time I got to the end, I realized that I was ready to bring Scully back into the fold, so to speak. (I mean, if Mulder can forgive her, well, so can I.) So that was how RECONNECTION was born, essentially a direct continuation of the tale from the end of TRUTHS UNTOLD.
I wanted to bring these two characters back together in a way that was normal and yet still uniquely "Mulder and Scully"... because, as we all know, they live on a higher (or lower) plane of normality than the rest of us.
So while I can set them down on a beach to walk in the sand and collect the odd seashell, their conversation can never stray too far away from their version of reality. But in this instance, I wanted Mulder to share with Scully the most peaceful moments from his recent harrowing experience: the dreams he has with him on the beach building the sandcastle spaceship with the boy. The scenes are open to a wide variety of interpretations; this is just one. Suffice to say that in an episode that really didn't deliver what I expected — especially for the end of a three episode arc — I was really taken with the visions of Mulder on the beach to the point of wanting to write a story around it.
Oh, and one that is remarkably free of angst. I promise.
