FICTION: In My Life

An anniversary brings back memories both light and dark...

Mulder and Scully are just back from their adventure in Arcadia when it's time for them to celebrate their anniversary as FBI partners in IN MY LIFE.

Why did I write an anniversary story? I think I must have recently (i.e., recently at the time in 1999) seen the pilot episode and noted the date of their pairing. I figured (in my Crossing Lines universe) that such dates would have more significance now that they had acknowledged a relationship between them. And with a lot of time having passed, I think Mulder would have been curious as to whether Scully had any regrets.

But apart from that, I had always been intrigued by the character of Melissa Scully. She received such short shrift from CC and the gang when she was killed off for no good reason. And adding to the fascination with Melissa were so many questions in the aftermath of One Breath that I decided to pursue both angles with one effort.

What would Scully have wanted to know when she awoke? And found out that three months had gone by? And that she had no memory of that time? How would her family have responded? How would Mulder have responded? Would it have been a case of "it's just too raw to rehash"?
